LAGRANGE -- Lois DeLena Hughes Baker, 78, 216 W. Washington St., died at her home Monday following a battle with cancer.
The funeral service, conducted by her pastor, the Rev. K. L. Buffaloe, and by the Rev. R. Norman Evans of New Bern, will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Antioch Presbyterian Church, 2306 Old Smithfield Road in Goldsboro, where she was a member. Burial will follow in Progressive Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 3790 Progressive Church Road in Princeton.
She was a native of New Bern, born Jan. 25, 1931, and was the daughter of the late Wilber and Lois Hughes.
Mrs. Baker was a graduate of New Bern High School and Flora Macdonald College in Red Springs. She taught in the public schools of Georgia and Alabama and in public and private schools in North Carolina.
She also worked for the North Carolina Department of Social Services, division of services for the blind, teaching independent living skills to blind children.
After retirement, she enjoyed working part-time arranging flowers for florists in Raleigh and Smithfield.
A mentor, teacher, counselor and friend, her true legacy is in the many lives she touched while participating in the ministry of the churches served by her husband during his 50 years as a Presbyterian minister. She served in many capacities, including pianist, music director, Sunday school teacher and youth director.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, the Rev. John Lewis Baker, and a son, David Lewis Baker of Durham.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Casey Funeral Home in Princeton.
