A loving mother, Ava Taylor Evans, 88, died Wednesday morning at home with her children in attendance.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tom Dorman officiating. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.

She was born in Wayne County to the late George Henry and Cicero Hall Taylor and was preceded in death by her husband, Jasper James "Jabo" Evans.

A grocer for more than 36 years, she had worked at Evans Grocery in Goldsboro and Dudley. She had also worked as a machine operator at Drutan Products.

A member of Brogden Chapel, she was the Sunday school secretary for more than 20 years.

Mrs. Evans is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Kay Evans of Arden; five daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy Jane and Edsel Rhodes of Dudley, Mae and Russell Hodge of Goldsboro, Faye and Arthur Fink of Yorktown, Va., Marie Joyner of Dudley and Cindy Jennette of Dudley; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, James Leonard Taylor, and two sisters, Josephine Lupton and Rossie Carter.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home and at other times will be at her home, 759 Genoa Road in Dudley.
