HENRY A. SIMMONS JR.
Died Aug. 16, 2009
Henry A. Simmons Jr., former Goldsboro Postmaster, passed away on Sunday. He was the son of the late H. Aldine Sr., and Daisy Grant Simmons of Goldsboro. Henry served as a B-25 bomber pilot in the Pacific Theater during World War II and retired as a Lt. Colonel from the United States Air Force Reserves. While serving his country, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with one Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. Henry also retired from the United States Postal Service after 37 years of service and for 20 years served as president and trustee of the Goldsboro Postal Credit Union.
Henry was past president of the Goldsboro Jaycees, former member of the Goldsboro Kiwanis Club, past president and trustee of the Wayne County Amateur Radio Association and was a charter member of Madison Avenue Baptist Church. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, golfer, and loved to raise roses. Henry was an active ham radio operator and had received numerous awards.
He is survived by his son, Don Simmons and wife, Kathleen of Windsor, Calif.; his daughter, Cindy Beal and husband, Ed of Roxboro; his granddaughter, Chris Teister and husband, Bob of San Diego; and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dean Simmons; and a beloved daughter, Gail S. King.
A family celebration gathering will be held at a later date.
