FRANKLIN R. ANDERSON
Died Sept. 9, 2008
KINSTON -- Franklin R. Anderson, 71, passed away on Wednesday at Pitt Memorial Hospital.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Bethel Free Will Baptist Church and other times at the residence. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Church officiated by pastors Archie Ratliff, David Paramore, and Marc Swanner. Burial will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park with full Military Honors.
A native of Wayne County, he was the son of the late Edgar and Nellie Gray Anderson of Goldsboro. He was preceded in death by brothers, O'max Gardner, Tarence Anderson, James Anderson, Billy Ray Anderson and sisters, Dorothy Tucker, Sarah Anderson, and Gaynelle Bradshaw.
Mr. Anderson attended schools at Belfast Elementary and Pikeville High School. He served in the U.S. Army as an M.P. for 23 years and retired with the rank of E-7. He served tours in Maryland and Virginia; served as a Color Honor Guard and as NCOIC of the Military Funeral Detail in Virginia; served overseas tours in Germany, Japan and Turkey, and saw combat as an advisor Vietnam; was recipient of various military awards including the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, Army Commendation Medal with the Third Oak Cluster, Good Conduct Medal -- 6th award. After retirement from Military Service in 1977, he joined the Goldsboro Police Department for a period of three years. Mr. Anderson was then employed at Stackhouse Inc. for 14 years.
He was a baseball and softball umpire for 42 years until he retired from both Stackhouse and umpiring in the year 1998. He was a member of the Moose Club, American Legion, TPA, AMVETS, and VFW Clubs. He was an avid fisherman and dedicated Kinston Indians fan. Mr. Anderson attended Bethel Free Will Baptist Church in Kinston.
Mr. Anderson is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Tucker Anderson; children, Sherwood Anderson and wife Phyllis, Billy Anderson and wife Leslie, Theresa Anderson, of Goldsboro, Brenda Aldrich and husband Cliff of Mount Olive; step-son, Danny Tucker and wife Rhesa of Winterville; eleven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; brother, J.J. Lane and wife Alice of Goldsboro; sisters, Mary Gray of Kinston, Betty Bland of Mt. Olive; and nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are being handled by Howard Carter Funeral Home.
