MOUNT OLIVE -- Walter Barfield Jr., 77, 209 Lee's Country Club Road, died Friday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Celebration of Life services will be held on Tuesday at noon at the Goldsboro-Raleigh Assembly Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ Inc., 214 W. Hooks River Road, with Bishop Alton Smith officiating. Entombment will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.

He was born in Wayne County to the late Walter Sr. and Katie Kornegay Barfield.

He was a member of St. Luke Disciples of Christ Church, Mount Olive. After graduating and walking across the street from Carver High School in 1949, he began his service to the community as a funeral attendant under the direction of the late L.E. Garris. He became a licensed funeral director in 1960.

After working 30 years as a director, Mr. Barfield fulfilled his dream of becoming sole owner of Garris Funeral Home in 1990. He was a member of the local, state and national Funeral Directors Associations and was also a member of Silver Link Masonic Lodge No. 125. He was a former member of the Mount Olive planning board.

He leaves to cherish a legacy of love to his devoted wife of 48 years Nannie M. Barfield; a daughter, McKale Barfield-Best and husband Ricky of Goldsboro; son, Terry Wynn and wife Janice of Mount Olive; six grandchildren, Watia Best, Rikki Best and Tyquan Best of Goldsboro, RaShonte Pettit of Leesburg, Ga., Arthur Cousins and Tevin Wynn of Mount Olive; one great-granddaughter, one sister, Lela Mae King and husband Joe of Faison; four brothers, John Barfield of Mount Olive, Joesph Barfield and wife Hedwig of Fayetteville, Alton Barfield Sr. and wife Evelyn of Raleigh; Thomas Barfield Sr. and wife, Everlena of Dudley and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carnice Barfield-Pettit and siblings, Josephine Lee, Ella Brewington, Milford Barfield Sr., Robert Barfield Sr. and Richard Barfield Sr.

A viewing will be held today from 4 to 8 p.m. at Garris Funeral Home Chapel with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. to receive friends. Another viewing will be helf Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Goldsboro-Raleigh Assembly Headquarters Building.
