LAGRANGE -- Major Thurston Wiggins Sr., 72, of 1474 Piney Grove Road, died Tuesday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. Thurston was born in Lenoir County to the late John James Wiggins and Mamie Jones Wiggins. He was preceded in death by a son, Major Thurston Wiggins Jr.; sister, Inez Radford; and three brothers, Herman Wiggins, Robert Wiggins and James T. "Scrubby" Wiggins. Thurston was a lifelong farmer and a member of Garris Chapel United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 28, 2008, at 11 a.m. from Rouse Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
Thurston is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Esther Ginn Wiggins; three children, James Anthony Wiggins and wife, Donna, of Wilson, Teresa Wiggins Hoyt and husband, Patrick, of Seven Springs, Clifton Bryan Wiggins of LaGrange; two sisters, Hazel Norman of LaGrange, Mildred Wiggins of Goldsboro; six grandchildren, Jamie Wiggins, Laura Wiggins, Sarah Wiggins, Luke Wiggins, Tristain Wiggins and Daniel Hill; and a step-great-granddaughter, Alyssa Vargas.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home and at other times they will be at the home. Online condolences may be expressed at www.rousefh.com.
