RACHEL T. FRIEND

Rachel Tilghman Friend, 85, of 609 Prince Ave., died Saturday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
Mrs. Friend was born in Lenoir County on April 25, 1922, to the late Simon and Virginia Bertie Cartwright Tilghman. She was retired from the A.S.C.S. office. Mrs. Friend was a member of Saint Luke United Methodist Church and was an avid supporter of the Women's Auxiliary of the Salvation Army.
Graveside services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Edgecombe Memorial Park in Tarboro, with the Rev. Robert E. Friend Jr. officiating.
She is survived by her husband, C. M. "Gov" Friend; daughter, Jacqueline Surles of Tarboro; step-sons and daughters-in-law, William E. and Caryn Friend of Cary and R. W. and Lou Friend of Grifton; her grandchildren, Catherine Penny of Raleigh, Greg Surles of Tarboro, and Pamela Gaines of Jacksonville; and six great-grandchildren.
The family requests memorials be made to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 2402 Wayne Memorial Dr., Goldsboro, N.C. 27534.
The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.
