John Ellis Whitfield, 72, 407 W. Chestnut St., died Wednesday at Wayne Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Wayne County and was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Lessie Morrison Whitfield; sisters Savannah, Lilly, Lula, and Annie Mae; and brothers Bennie and James.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at McIntyre Funeral Home Chapel, 900 S. George St., with Apostle D.L. McIntyre officiating. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Armwood Whitfield of the home; sons David Williams of Goldsboro and Ervin Williams of Dudley; daughters Lillian Pittman of Goldsboro, Shirley Speight of Columbus, Ga., Cathy Baker of Fort Hood, Texas, Sybil Fisher of Charlotte; brothers Larry Whitfield of Goldsboro, Kirby Whitfield Sr. of Roanoke, Va.; sister Macie Laverne Jones of Roanoke, Va.; 13 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be today at McIntyre Funeral Home from 3 until 7:30 p.m.
