WILSON -- James Wilbert "Tommy" Mitchell, 77, died Tuesday.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Joyner's Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Upper Black Creek Church Cemetery with Chaplain Captain Matt Brewer officiating.

Mr. Mitchell served in the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1951 in the 7th Infantry Division in Korea. He was a member of the Frozen Chosen during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. He received a Purple Heart, the Good Conduct Medal and the National Service Ribbon. Mr. Mitchell was also a member of the American Legion, the VFW and the Disabled Veterans.

He is survived by his wife, Ovella Mosley Mitchell; daughter, Julie Johnson and husband, Ronnie, of Pine Level; sons, Michael Mitchell and wife, Amy, of Princeton, James Mitchell Jr. of Kenly, Dennis Hales and wife, Mary, of Kenly and Tracy Anderson and wife, Jennifer, of Seven Springs; stepdaughter, Betty Boudreau and husband, Kerry, of Fairfax, Va.; stepson, Gene Register and wife, Pat, of Bailey; sisters, Lila Shealy of Elm City, Mary Poythress and husband, Ed, of Wilson, Margaret Dochterman and husband, Herbert, of Pinetops, Patricia Gower and husband, Elbert, of Kenly, Joyce Adams of Pikeville and Evelyn Mitchell of Arkansas; brother, Leonard Mitchell of Alabama; aunt, Lillian Radford of Princeton;12 grandchildren and 27 nieces and nephews.

Family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. last night at Joyner's Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway.
