Carol Artis named Wayne County principal of year

Carol Artis, principal at North Drive Elementary School, has been named this year's Principal of the Year for the Wayne County Public Schools.
An educator since 1986, her teaching career began in Wilmington, at Edwin A. Alderman Elementary School.
The Goldsboro native returned to her home county the following year, to teach at School Street Elementary School. In 1998, she took on the role of curriculum facilitator at the school before making the move into administration. She became assistant principal at North Drive Elementary in 2000 and within two years was promoted to the role of principal.
A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she received a bachelor's degree in elementary education. She earned master's degrees in school administration and education and curriculum from Campbell University.
The annual Wells Fargo North Carolina Principal of the Year program was introduced 29 years ago, and has provided financial awards for the state Principal of the Year competition.
Local principals of the year receive $150 and represent their district at the regional Principal of the Year contest, with the winner advancing to the state event next spring.
School Superintendent Dr. Steven Taylor praised Ms. Artis for her accomplishments.
"Ms. Artis is an effective educator and an outstanding principal who has garnered the respect of her peers and colleagues," he said. "Her character, core educational beliefs and commitment to help students become successful make her the ideal representative of both Wayne County Public Schools and the Southeast Region if selected as part of this competition."
