SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek had trouble finishing against North Johnston on Tuesday evening.
The Gators fixed their issues on Wednesday.
Spring Creek avoided turnovers, hit key shots and played solid team defense in a 51-41, non-conference win over Jones Senior.
"I was really pleased to see our guys play with confidence against a pretty good team," Spring Creek head coach Taylor Jones said. "Sometimes the best thing that can happen is to get right back on the floor the night after a loss."
Chad Spurgeon hit the first two shots of the game and propelled the Gators to a 9-1 lead after just two minutes. Spring Creek capitalized on some sloppy play on the Jones Senior offensive end and built a 31-21 lead at halftime.
A pair of baskets by Brandon Gonzalez to open the third quarter re-ignited the Gators offense. The Trojans continued to struggle with Spring Creek's man-to-man defense and the Gators' lead ballooned to 18 points.
Jones Senior made a late rally behind forward Marcus Staten, who scored eight of his 12 points in the final six minutes. The Trojans pulled to within eight points with two minutes to play, but could not get any closer.
Tre Hammonds iced the game with a pair of free throws in the final minute.
"I thought we played the entire game at a pace that we could handle," Jones said. "We didn't get too fast and out of control, but we didn't slow the game down too much either and let (Jones Senior) get their half-court game going."
K.D. McCall paced Jones Senior with 13 points and seven rebounds. Marcus Staten added 12 points.
Gonzalez led Spring Creek with 18 points. Hammonds added 14 points and six rebounds. Spurgeon finished with nine points and five boards.
Spring Creek (2-2 overall) travels to South Lenoir next Tuesday.
