Golden Falcons dispatch county foe, 70-59

PIKEVILLE -- An impressive win with no complacent attitude.

Mike Williams dropped in a game-high 25 points and Charles B. Aycock upended county foe Southern Wayne 70-59 in a pivotal Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference battle at the Falcons' Nest on Friday evening.

The Golden Falcons (12-9 overall, 7-3 ECC) seized a half-game lead over the Saints (13-7, 7-4) heading into the final week of regular-season play.

"It was a must-win for us," CBA head coach Steve Moats said.

Javarris Williams and Greg Williams supplied 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Golden Falcons. Overall, 11 Aycock players scratched in the scoring column on senior night.

Ronnell Outlaw emerged the Saints' lone scorer in double figures with 17 points. Maurice Butler chipped in nine, while Tarvis Bradshaw knocked down eight.

"A pivotal game, yes," first-year SW head coach Dwight Smith said. "We ran into a buzzsaw. We knew they were going to have a lot of energy and tonight, they out-played us."

Aycock trailed 10-9 and broke the game open with a 16-2 run that lasted more than five minutes. Mike Williams' old-fashioned, three-point play highlighted the surge which led to a stunning 21-point advantage at halftime.

Southern Wayne chipped away at the deficit in the third quarter. However, the Saints couldn't overcome a steady dose of Williams, who turned three offensive rebounds into six points and also drained a 3-pointer.

Williams converted 11 field goals and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.

"Mike is a good ballplayer, is tough to guard because he can go outside as well," Moats grinned.

The Golden Falcons led 51-37 after three quarters and extended their lead to as much as 23 points in the fourth. Moats emptied his bench with two-plus minutes to the delight of a student section that pleaded to see certain players take the court.

The Saints closed the final margin to 11 points.

Moats was pleased to see his team keep the intensity throughout the 32-minute affair.

"The nice part for our guys is we had struggles that our guys have the memory of that, so they don't get complacent," Moats said. "The last two games we've played well. It's a nice time to be peaking and hopefully it will continue."
