DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne's maturation process continued during its 48-41 victory over defending Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference champion Charles B. Aycock on Wednesday evening.
The Saints saw a 15-point lead shrink to four, but hung on behind solid performances from freshmen Zaria Atkins and Cierra Thompson. Atkins led all scorers with 19 points and Thompson had 10.
"We're continuing to grow and mature," Southern Wayne head coach Ricky Lofton said. "With each game and every possession we're getting better and better, and our two freshmen were really good tonight."
Lauren Butler paced the Golden Falcons with 14 points and Myleah Jones added 11 points.
Aycock (4-11 overall, 1-3 ECC) plays host to Triton on Friday. The Saints (10-6, 3-2) travel to Triton on Jan. 22.
