CBA's Davis shuts out county rival

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock has had its share of struggles with runners in scoring position this summer.

Those troubles were nowhere to be found Tuesday evening.

Six different Golden Falcons recorded a hit and Aycock rolled to a 10-0 mercy-rule shortened victory over Wayne South at Charles Davis Field.

Kyle Davis pitched a one-hit shutout to earn the win on the mound.

Garrett Joyner led off the bottom of the first inning with a single and scored on a Saints' error with two outs.

Conner Crandall reached on an error in the home half of the second inning and came around to score on Ben Rouse's RBI single. Joyner added an RBI double as the Golden Falcons' lead grew to 3-0.

"That's a good team, they played well," South head coach David Combs said. "We didn't play our best defensively. We gave them a few runs and we gave them a few base runners. You get a couple of walks and an error, and it compounds."

Aycock loaded the bases with three two-out walks in the bottom of the fourth inning. Hank Smitherman extended the margin to 4-0 with an infield RBI single. Noah West followed with an RBI single to center field and Jake Naughton tacked on a two-run single.

The lead swelled to 8-0 on Tim Naughton's RBI single.

"We're starting to get a little better with guys in scoring position," Aycock head coach Nelson Cunningham said. "I knew it would come with a little bit of maturity."

Braxton Leeper scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth inning and West's RBI double ended the ballgame. Three Wayne South pitchers combined to issue six walks and the Saints made a pair of errors.

Davis consistently kept the ball down in the strike zone, mixed his pitches effectively and let his defense work behind him. The right-hander recorded three strikeouts and allowed just one walk.

Wayne South reached base only three times.

"Kyle threw strikes with three pitches and he got ahead in the count," Cunningham said. "The wins start on the mound. Kyle has to locate and he knows that. He has to throw all three pitches for strikes and he can throw backwards in counts and that's what he lives off of. If he's able to do it he is one of the better pitchers we've got."

The Saints visit Wayne West tonight. Aycock (12-5 overall) travels to Spring Creek on Thursday.
