PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock woke up the bats just time to notch an 8-3, come-from-behind victory over Greene Central on Tuesday night.
The Golden Falcons fell behind in the first inning when Wes Sowers belted a two-run home run that plated Will Bynum. The Rams added an insurance run in the second when Bynum ripped an RBI single that scored Landon Elmore.
"I thought we took a little to long to get it going tonight," said C.B. Aycock head coach Charles Davis. "But once our guys started be aggressive and swinging at strikes, we were able to turn it around."
Adron Hollowell got Aycock on the board with a fourth-inning, solo home run.
The Golden Falcons took the lead one inning later with an offensive outburst.
Tyler Ruffin drew a lead-off walk and was followed by a single from Nicholas McGee. Jeff Carmel followed with an RBI base hit, Travis Musselman hit into a fielders' choice and Connor Narron was hit by a pitch. Hollowell followed with his second key hit of the night, a two-run single which gave Aycock a 4-3 advantage.
McGee blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning and essentially put the game out of reach.
"McGee and the guys toward the bottom of the lineup really stepped up tonight," said Davis. "Greene Central has a good team and we had not played in a week, so we needed their energy."
Bryant Stafford tossed five innings and struck out seven batters as he earned the win on the pitcher's mound. Derek Limbaugh recorded two sterling innings of relief.
Hollowell finished the night 2-for-3 with three RBI. McGee added three hits and Jeff Carmel reached base three times for the Golden Falcons (5-1 overall).
Greene Central was paced by Sowers, who tallied two hits and two RBI. Bynum reached base twice.
"I thought we struck out entirely too many times tonight," said Rams' head coach Scott Jones. "C.B. Aycock is a good team and once they settled down at the plate they were able to square up some pitches."
Greene Central (3-2) entertains Eastern Plains 2-A rival Tarboro on Friday. C.B. Aycock plays host to Northern Nash today.
