Wayne Country Day outscored Trinity Christian-Fayetteville 16-5 during third-period action, and cruised to a 54-40, non-conference victory Thursday evening.

The Chargers, who have won five of their last six outings, closed the third quarter on a 15-2 run and led 41-18 after 24 minutes of play. The Crusaders posted 22 fourth-quarter points, but couldn't overcome the insurmountable deficit.

Catherine Ford pumped in a game-high 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Kim Martell provided 15 points and seven rebounds, while Sarah Best had 12 points.

Weather permitting, Wayne Country Day (10-10 overall) travels to Upper Room tonight.

Warriors drop game

Eastern Wayne missed a pair of late opportunities en route to a 63-61 defeat against Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe South Johnston on Thursday night.

Trailing 61-57 with less than two minutes to play, Eastern Wayne guard Tiarra McIntyre drove to the basket and hit a layup. After Trojan point guard Courtney Woods answered with a pair of foul shots, Tia Jones scored a putback to pull the Warriors within two points.

South Johnston turned the ball over on the ensuing possession.

Eastern Wayne (3-11 overall, 1-4 ECC) earned a chance to tie the game when Shontae Boseman pulled up for a jump shot, but her shot missed the mark and a tip-in attempt also fell off the rim as time expired.

"We played pretty well offensively most of the night," said first-year Warriors head coach Tyrone Wagner. "We had a shot to send it to overtime, but it just wouldn't fall."

Boseman led the Warriors with 15 points and eight rebounds. McIntrye and Jones each added 11 points respectively.

Eastern Wayne entertains Triton on Tuesday.

Wrestling

Eagles tie record

Rosewood equaled the single-season, school record for dual-team victories with a non-conference sweep of Wilson Beddingfield and county foe Spring Creek on Thursday evening.

The Eagles, now 27-7 overall, rolled to a 50-23 decision over the Bruins and dismantled the Gators 61-13.

Seniors Cameron Lane, David Thornton, Jacob Roberts, Brian Sittig and Scott Pate competed in their final home regular-season matches. The quintet logged a combined 7-0 record on the night.

Rosewood 103-pounder Chris Lane avenged two losses to the Gators' Thomas Edwards with a 60-second pin. Pate triumphed at 130 and 135 pounds, and boosted his career win total to 94.

"Scott is a true competitor and team leader, and he is peaking in top form in the final stretch of the regular season," said Rosewood coach Bill Edmundson.

The Eagles return to action Feb. 6 in the Carolina/Four Rivers Conference tournament Princeton. Opening-round matches begin at 9 a.m.

JV sports

* Boys' basketball: Trinity-Fayetteville 70, Wayne Country Day 50 -- Josiah David led the Chargers with 17 points and Hil Tanner added eight.

* Girls' basketball: South Johnston 38, Eastern Wayne 33 -- Jasmine Benjamin contributed 13 points and three steals for the Warriors. Sequia Hall supplied eight points and eight rebounds.

Middle schools

* Boys' basketball: Mount Olive 42, Brogden 39 -- Jatarvis Bradshaw led Mount Olive with 20 points and Tyiwan Johnson added 12. Mount Olive (8-6, 6-2 Div. II) clinched a share of the Wayne County Div. II Middle School Conference championship with the win. Brogden's Khalil Robinson led all scorers with 23 points.

* Boys' basketball: Trinity-Fayetteville 43, Wayne Country Day 21 -- Marlon Coley scored nine points for the Chargers and Tae Yang Kim contributed five.
