Eastern Wayne bounced back from a loss on Wednesday evening and picked up a critical 5-2 soccer win over Wilson Beddingfield on Thursday night in New Hope.

The victory kept the Warriors (5-5-3 overall) tied with the Bruins (7-9-0) for second place in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference at 5-3-0.

Brandi Dean scored twice for Eastern Wayne in the first half and Janielle Daniel added a goal as the Warriors led 3-1 at the half.

Anna Hajjar and Danielle Daniel each found the back of the net for Eastern Wayne in the final 40 minutes.

Jamie DeRatt scored both goals for Beddingfield.

"To keep pace with Beddingfield we had to get a result tonight," said Warriors head coach Jorg Wagner. "Containing Jamie DeRatt is always a challenge, but apart from her early breakaway, we were able to contain her dribble penetration by double and sometimes triple teaming her. Overall, I was very pleased with our effort tonight."

Eastern Wayne travels to C.B. Aycock on Tuesday.

WCS prevails

KINSTON -- Wayne Christian saw its offense come to life in a 6-1 win at Bethel Christian on Thursday.

The Eagles shook off a sluggish start and Brittany Kornegay's early goal on a cross from Devan Isenhower got Wayne Christian on the board.

Katie Isenhower, Miranda Taylor, Kornegay and Brooke Barfield each scored for the Eagles in the second half.

Wayne Christian (4-8-0 overall) entertains Trinity of Durham on Tuesday.

Hunt strikes late

WILSON -- Wilson Hunt scored three times in the final four minutes and clinched the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference regular-season title with a 3-0 victory over C.B. Aycock on Thursday night.

The Warriors held a 36-1 advantage in shots and a 9-0 edge in corner kicks.

Golden Falcons keeper Courtney Sheeks recorded 20 saves.

Aycock (8-6-1 overall, 4-4-0 ECC) plays host to Eastern Wayne on Tuesday.

Baseball

CBA stops Comets

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock pushed across 10 runs in the fifth inning in a 15-4, non-conference win over Clayton on Thursday.

Adron Hollowell paced the Golden Falcons with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate with two doubles and two RBI. Jordan Quinn provided three hits and four RBI. Nicholas McGee (two RBI), Connor Narron (three RBI) and Jonathan Taylor (RBI) each had a hit.

Derek Limbaugh earned the win on the mound tossing four shutout innings and allowing three hits with one strikeout and three walks.

Aycock (14-5 overall) visits Wilson Hunt today. The Warriors defeated the Golden Falcons in Pikeville earlier this season.

Saints can't cash in

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne failed to cash in on a bases-loaded opportunity with no outs in a tied ballgame and eventually fell 9-4 to Hoggard on Thursday.

The Saints had the bases loaded with no outs right tying the game at 4-4 in the home half of the sixth inning. Southern Wayne failed to capitalize and Hoggard responded with five seven-inning runs.

Keenan Winn had two hits for the Saints. Jordan Hood (RBI), Tyler Edwards, Zach Grantham, and Kevin Wise each contributed a hit.

Reliever Raymond Valazquez took the loss on the mound.

Southern Wayne (10-11 overall) travels to Kinston today.

Chargers upended

WILSON -- Six Wayne Country Day errors led to six unearned runs in a 10-4 loss to Community Christian on Thursday.

Cole Davis finished with three hits and an RBI for the Chargers. Jack Scott contributed two hits and two RBI and Cody Neal added a triple and an RBI.

Scott took the loss on the mound.

Wayne Country Day visits Kerr-Vance today.

Softball

Warriors fall

Eastern Wayne dropped a 10-2 decision to Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Wilson Beddingfield on Thursday evening in New Hope.

Lindsey Frederick went 3-for-3 for the Warriors with a run scored.

Lani Fricks took the loss on the mound allowing 10 runs (six earned) with 10 strikeouts and six walks.

Eastern Wayne (7-10 overall, 2-6 ECC) visits Greene Central on Monday.

Rebels fall hard

KENLY -- Five errors and allowing big innings haunted North Duplin in a 17-4 loss at Carolina 1-A Conference rival North Johnston on Thursday.

The Panthers had a pair of four-run innings and pushed across six runs in the home half of the fifth. North Johnston pounded out 13 hits.

Tearra Ammons collected two hits for the Rebels. Ashley Cartwright (two RBI), Alonna Pate (RBI) and Skylar McCarty each added a hit.

Ansley Hill took the loss on the mound.

North Duplin (5-9 overall, 2-3 Carolina) hosts Princeton on Tuesday.

Tennis

Warriors pound KHS

Eastern Wayne completed its regular-season schedule with a 9-0 thumping of Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Kinston on Thursday afternoon in New Hope.

The Warriors finished second in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference behind C.B. Aycock and secured a spot in the dual team playoffs in two weeks.

Russell Turner, Aaron Dunmire, Eric Barnes, Mike Barnette, Marcos Machado and Joe DiCesare were all winners in singles play for Eastern Wayne.

The doubles teams of Turner-Dunmire, Barnes-Barnette and Grant Nix-Dan Price were also victorious.

Eagles defeat FM

Wayne Christian turned back Flora McDonald 7-2 on Thursday afternoon.

Taylor Gray, Christopher Eason, Daniel Glover, Woody Sasser, Kenneth Giordano and Matt Thompson were each singles winners for the Eagles.

The doubles team of Giordano-Jason Lin was also victorious for Wayne Christian.

The Eagles (7-0 overall) travels to Eastern Wayne to play the Warriors' JV squad today.

KVA routs WCDS

Kerr-Vance blanked Wayne Country Day 9-0 on Thursday at Wayne Community College.

The Chargers (2-6 overall) entertain Wayne Christian on Monday.

Golf

Gators second

Blake Rousay earned medalist honors with a 1-over par 73 to lead Spring Creek to a second-place finish in the Carolina 1-A Conference golf match contested at Three Eagles Golf Club on Wednesday.

Tyquan Best added an 81 for the Gators. Tanner Smith fired an 86 and Graham Bennett finished with a round of 90.

North Johnston won the team competition with a four-man total of 328, two strokes better than Spring Creek's 330. Princeton finished third overall with a 367 total.

The Carolina 1-A Conference teams will play at Cardinal Country Club on Monday.

Track

CBA sinks Vikings

KINSTON -- Khendra Reid set a school record and Charles B. Aycock defeated Kinston 79-67 in a dual Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference meet on Thursday.

Reid posted a career- and program-best mark of 10.81 seconds in the 100-meter dash.

Other first-place finishers for the Golden Falcons were Nick Redding (400 meters), Elliot Gonzalez (800 meters), Deven Sanders (200 meters), Justin Whitaker (3200 meters) and Aycock's 400-meter relay team.

EW wins tri-meet

WILSON -- Eastern Wayne finished with a score of 59 points and won an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference tri-meet with host Wilson Beddingfield and Wilson Hunt on Thursday.

The Bruins finished second with a team score of 45 ahead of the Warriors score of 38.

Leanna Kirkland finished first for Eastern Wayne in the 1600 meters and the 800 meters. Tia Jones finished tied for first in the high jump and Ayuanna Becruise earned a first place finish in the 300 meter hurdles. Kelly Gregorcyk finished first in the 3,200-meter run.

JV sports

* Baseball: C.B. Aycock 7, D.H. Rose 1 -- Travis Musselman (three RBI), Collin DuBose and Jeff Davis (RBI) each contributed two hits for the Golden Falcons (13-2 overall). Mick Walker (home run), Christian Pate and Avery Anderson had a hit apiece.

Middle schools

* Softball: Grantham 16, Greenwood 5 -- Taylor Parker earned the win on the mound while recording 18 strikeouts and allowing just one hit. Parker provided three hits and the plate and Brooke Coty and Hope Rose each had two hits. Grantham (8-3 overall) plays host to Brogden on Monday.

* Softball: Princeton 22, Selma 0 -- Katelyn Edwards contributed four hits including a double and a home run for the Bulldogs. Savanna Massengill added four hits and Tori Paul and Logan Jones each had three hits. Jones earned the win on the mound with nine strikeouts.

* Baseball: Eastern Wayne 12, Spring Creek 2 -- Jeremy Lancaster and Tyler Huetter each had two hits and Josh Dixon added a triple for Eastern Wayne. The Warriors visit Dillard on Monday.
