Jean H. Johnston
June 13, 1942 – April 28, 2018
Jean Hardy Johnston, 75, passed away Saturday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by her family. Death is the last shadow before heaven’s dawn.
Jean was born in Dublin, Va., June 13, 1942, to the late Charlie and Margaret Haga Hardy. She was married to the late Herbert Mason Johnston.
Jean taught Sunday school for about 20 years at First Baptist Church in Pikeville. She ministered to many shut-ins. Jean was a longtime member of Pleasant Grove Free Will Baptist Church of Pikeville, where she helped serve in the kitchen on many occasions.
She also loved the antique business.
A service to celebrate Jean’s life will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, 2018, at Pleasant Grove Free Will Baptist Church, with the Rev. Barry Stallings officiating.
The family will greet friends following the service at the church.
Interment will be Thursday, May 3, 2018, at 11 a.m. in Pikeville Cemetery.
Jean is survived by her daughter, Lynn Whitehead and husband, Alan; her son, Brian Johnston and special friend, Wendy; three grandchildren, Casey Scarboro, Brittney Medeiros and Joshua Johnston; two great-grandchildren, Bradley and Gracie Johnston; brother, Davey Hardy and wife, Sharon, of Virginia; nephew, Jimbo Hardy; and niece Jena and husband, Eric.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Jimmy Hardy of Virginia, and a niece, Pam.
Memorials may be given in Jean’s memory to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.
