Evelyn Gardner Starnes, 73, resident of Mount Olive, passed away early Monday morning, Jan. 22, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Graveside services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at the Calypso Cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Paul Rose. The family will receive friends at the Starnes residence on Thursday from 1 until 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, they request that memorial gifts be made to Kitty Askins Hospice, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534, or to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, Tenn., 38105.

Evelyn had been an employee of Mt. Olive Pickle Company with 27 years of loyal and dedicated service. While in their employ, she was seasonal operations manager, overseeing the green shed, Christmas pack, and gift and novelty shop.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Garland Ray Starnes; a son, Steven Starnes of Mount Olive; a daughter and son-in-law, Lori Starnes Price and Alex Price of New Bern; four grandchildren, Adam Price, Noah Price, Mikayla Raye Starnes, and Matthew Anderson and wife, Breanna; a sister, Audrey G. Coates of Garner; sister-in-law and brothers-in-law, Patricia S. and Jerry Henson of Marbury, Ala., and Robert Earl Starnes of Seven Springs; and several nieces and nephews.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Rudolph "Doc" and Bertha Faircloth Gardner; a brother, Billy Rudolph Gardner; a sister and brothers-in-law, Jo Ann G. and Dennis Poythress, Troy Coates, and Edward Starnes; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Eva and Elman Starnes; and several nephews.
