SIDNEY W. PHILLIPS SR.

June 5, 1947-Jan. 11, 2018

Sidney Warren "Sid" Phillips Sr., 70, Seven Springs, passed away peacefully Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018, while surrounded by his loving family after an unexpected illness.

Sid was born June 5, 1947, to the late Henry Franklin Phillips and Mary Lou Ward Phillips.

Sid was a graduate of Campbell University.

He retired as senior vice president from the State Employees Credit Union in 2015 following 45 years of dedicated service.

Work wasn't just a job for Sid, it was a genuine passion. He had a love for his members and employees that guided him.

Blessed with a kind, gentle spirit and great integrity, Sid had a way of connecting with everyone who crossed his path. You always felt as if no one was of greater importance than you when dealing with him.

One to never seek the spotlight, Sid worked quietly behind the scenes to help others better their lives and offer a helping hand.

Sid was a longtime member of Kinston Rotary Club.

Sid was a lover of the outdoors. In earlier years, Sid enjoyed bird hunting, including trips to Nebraska with his father, son and friends.

He enjoyed watching a good bird dog work and the excitement of a covey of quail being flushed.

In more recent years, Sid was a passionate fisherman, traveling as far as Alaska to fish with his son and friends.

Whether on the river, the lake or at the coast, the tug of a fish on the line always brought a smile to Sid's face.

Sid truly enjoyed the peacefulness of living in the country.

He worshiped the Lord at Seven Springs United Methodist Church, where he was a lifetime member.

He served his community as a member of Seven Springs Volunteer Rescue Squad for more than 20 years.

With Sid, family always came first. His greatest passion was being husband, father and Papa to his family.

He was a loving, wonderful and very devoted husband to Caroline. Getting married so young, they grew up together as one. They always worked side by side to take care of and provide for their family.

Warren and Elizabeth have many fond memories of their dad always being present and supportive, from taking Warren on countless hunting and fishing excursions to coaching Elizabeth's softball teams through the years. He always beamed with pride and joy when his children were mentioned.

Over the last several years, Sid truly took great joy in being Papa to his grandchildren, Brody and Ryan. They always had a way of bringing a sparkle to his eye.

He will be missed, but greatly remembered.

Family and friends will be received Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home.

A service to celebrate and honor Sid's life will be held Monday, Jan. 15, 2018, at 1 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Seven Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Sid is survived by his wife of 50 years, Caroline Smith Phillips; son, Sidney Warren Phillips Jr. and his fianceé, Kelsey Lingerfelt; daughter, Elizabeth Phillips Carroll and her husband, Dan; two grandsons, Brody Michael Carroll and Ryan Warren Carroll; brother, Henry Franklin "Bo" Phillips Jr.; and Sid's mother-in-law, Nelda Kornegay Smith.
