Conway Joel Rose, 91, died Nov. 8, 2017, in Goldsboro, N.C.
He was born in Goldsboro, N.C., July 19, 1926, the son of Dr. David and Mrs. Janet Conway Rose.
He attended Goldsboro city schools, and graduated from the University of North Carolina with a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology and a minor in chemistry, and lettered in welterweight boxing.
Conway was an Eagle Scout, and served in the United States Marine Corps as a medic at Okinawa during World War II.
He was a writer, a photographer, a pilot, a builder and an ardent entrepreneur, and will be remembered for his voracious curiosity, his unending commitment to his community and his deep love for his family.
Conway was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, D.J. Rose Jr.; and his sister, Marjorie Rose Patrick.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lew Rose, and children, Lucy Rose (Mac Lumpkin), and their children, Collier and Kate, and Tom Rose (Sandy Rose) and their children, Nick, Matt, Tyler and Jenna.
He is also survived by nieces and nephews, Molly Patrick Kelley, Terry Patrick Walton, Janet Conway Rose, Page Rose Pond, John Rose and David Rose.
A licensed contractor by trade, Conway's greatest accomplishment was the creation of the village of Walnut Creek.
He was also a nationally-certified accredited antiques appraiser and a lifelong scholar of history and eastern North Carolina archaeology.
His smile was infectious, and will be remembered for his passion for life.
A memorial service for Conway will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10, 2017, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, with the Rev. James Harry and the Rev. Phyllis Vail officiating.
The family will greet friends following the service in the church parlor.
A private interment for the family will be held in Willow Dale Cemetery.
