GERALD W. LAYDEN
March 18, 1933-Oct. 19, 2017
On Oct. 19, 2017, Gerald W. Layden, 84, passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness. He was born March 18, 1933, to Reva and Herman Layden of Tyner, N.C.
Gerald attended Chowan County Schools, graduating in 1951. He attended business school before joining the Air Force, serving four years, one year in Seoul, Korea, during the war.
After the service, he joined First Citizens Bank in Raleigh. He was transferred to Goldsboro in 1959 and was vice president when he retired.
Gerald was an active member of First Baptist Church, serving as a trustee and on many committees. He was very active in many organizations including the Boy Scouts, Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Goldsboro Housing Authority and Goldsboro Country Club.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Carolyn, of Cary; daughter, Glenda Chagaris; son, Wayne Layden, and wife, Corazon, of Raleigh; granddaughter, Ashely Blake and husband, Jon; grandson, Jeff Kincaid and wife, Lani, of Goldsboro; two great-granddaughters, Riley Blake and Emery Kincaid of Goldsboro; brothers-in-law, Louis Harrell Jr. and wife, Brenda, of Edenton, N.C., Ray K. Hodge of Smithfield; and sister-in-law, Jane Layden of Nashville, Tenn.
A service of remembrance will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made in lieu of flowers to First Baptist Church in Goldsboro or to the American Lung Association.
