John Richard Skuce Jr., 78, resident of Hatch's Hill, Mount Olive, died Saturday afternoon, July 30, 2016, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 4, 2016, at 4 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home with Dr. Bill Boyd officiating, and followed by burial in the Hatch Family Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home during the hour before the service.
Mr. Skuce was a native of Rhode Island. At the age of 16, he enlisted in the Rhode Island National Guard, and at age 18, he joined the United States Marine Corps, serving for three years. For the remainder of his life, he remained a true patriot. He was commandant of the Tar Heel Detachment of the Marine Corps League in 2004, and also in 2004, he was named Marine of the Year by the N.C. Marine Corps League. He was actively involved in the Capital City Young Marines, whose group does an annual camp on the family farm.
He was a textile machine salesman, both nationally and internationally.
His father, John Richard Skuce, is deceased.
Mr. Skuce is survived by his wife, Joyce Hatch; his mother, Sally J. Skuce of Rhode Island; five children, John R. Skuce III and wife, Karen, of Erwin, N.C., Bridget A. Skuce, Timothy H. Skuce and wife, Kerri, and Keith J. Skuce and wife, Erica, all of Rhode Island, Samuel Nelson Skuce and wife, Jeannette, of Garner, N.C.; sisters, Judith Gorton and Dede Phalen, both of Rhode Island, and Nancy Chase of Fla.; brothers, Donald Skuce of Rhode Island, and Stephen Skuce of Massachusetts; and seven grandchildren, Courtney, Andrew, Cameron, Zachary, Hannah, Aries and Dylan Skuce.
