DR. ERNEST EDWARD PHELPS

Dr. Ernest "Ernie" Edward Phelps, 84, 380 Wayne Country Day Road, Goldsboro, passed away Monday evening at Kitty Askins with his family by his side.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at Salem United Methodist Church. Committal service will take place in Springbrook Cemetery in Mansfield, Mass.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret Hodson Phelps of Goldsboro; a son, Brian Edward Phelps and wife, Diane Carlson, of Jenks, Okla.; a daughter, Elaine Phelps Van Hoy (Charlie) of Goldsboro; grandchildren, Jessica Keller (Fred) of Goldsboro, Charles Kley (Alexa), serving in the Air Force at Ramstein Air Base in Germany, Joseph Phelps of Moorhead, Minn., and Daniel Phelps of Bloomington, Minn.; and eight great-grandchildren.
Dr. Phelps was born in Greenfield, Mass., to Evelyn Ellis Phelps and Lawson Edward Phelps.
He served in the United States Air Force, and earned his undergraduate and master's degrees from Emerson College in Boston, Mass., and his Ph.D. from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.
He was a professor of mass communications, and managed public broadcasting stations at universities, retiring from East Carolina University in 1996.
