MARGARET SMITH KORNEGAY
Feb. 9, 1923-April 11, 2015
Margaret Smith Kornegay, 92, Goldsboro, passed away Saturday evening at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by her family.
Margaret was born in Dekalb, Ga., Feb. 9, 1923, to the late Audie Clay Smith and Nannie Pearl Haney Smith. She was married to the late Philander "Flap" Kornegay.
Margaret had been employed with J.P. Stevens Co. in Goldsboro.
Her life was filled with humility, kindness and a love for others that she displayed every time she smiled.
She dedicated her life to serving her family unselfishly and to serving her Lord.
Margaret was a member of Falling Creek Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Faithful Workers Sunday school class.
She enjoyed life, especially her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Margaret was affectionately known as "Granny" to all her family and their friends.
She had a great love for baseball, and would travel all over to watch her grandchildren and great-grandchildren play ball.
For many years, Granny was a member of Southern Wayne Booster Club.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 14, 2015, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Falling Creek Baptist Church, followed by a service celebrating Margaret's life in the sanctuary at 7:30 p.m., with Dr. Billy Webb officiating. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 15, 2015, in Wayne Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at other times at the home of Libby and Pete Parks, 104 Brockwood Ave., Goldsboro.
Margaret is survived by her daughters, Diane Mozingo of Goldsboro and Libby Parks and husband, Pete, of Goldsboro; grandchildren, Malinda M. Kroskie and husband, Mike, Rene Grantham and husband, Rick, Jeff Mozingo and wife, Penny, Tracy L. Edwards and husband, Mike, Phyllis Howell and Phillip Parks and wife, Megan; and eight great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her sister, Patsy Smith Cowan of Marietta, Ga., and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, Margaret was preceded in death by her daughter, Phyllis Lane; three brothers; and three sisters.
The family would like to express its appreciation for the compassionate care provided by her special caregivers, Peggy Parrish and Mary Kornegay.
