Clyde Lamar Owensby, 88, died Friday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.

Born in Grover, N.C., he was the son of the late Columbus Lee and Mary Erwood Owensby and the husband of Mary Ellen Owensby. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alma Beamon Owensby.

Retired from Dupont in Kinston, Lamar was a member of Madison Avenue Baptist Church, where he had served as a Sunday school teacher at church. He also served with both the Goldsboro Fire Department and the Brian Center. He was a member of Wayne Masonic Lodge 112, where he served as chaplain for more than 20 years, was a member of the Sons of the Confederacy, delivered Meals on Wheels and was a previous member of Adamsville Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Madison Avenue Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Robert Fulkerson officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the narthex of the sanctuary. Graveside service with Masonic Rites will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park.

In addition to his wife, Lamar is survived by four children and their spouses, sons and their wives, Beamon and Stacy Owensby of Fremont, N.C., and Shelby and Jamie Owensby of Moncure, N.C.; daughters and their husbands, Charmagne and Bob Burns of Wahalla, S.C., and Melody and George Moore of Garner, N.C.; a brother, Palmer Owensby and wife, Gail, of Granite Falls, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
