ROBERT C. LAWING

Robert Calvin "Heavy" Lawing, 84, Charlotte, N.C., passed away early Sunday morning, Oct. 5, 2014, at Carolina Medical Center Main Campus.
Born in the Derita area of Charlotte Feb. 3, 1930, he was the son of the late Henry Avery Lawing and Louise Blackwelder Lawing.
He retired Oct. 16, 1987, as a manager from BellSouth after 39 years of service working in Charlotte, N.C., Atlanta, Ga., and Lenoir, N.C., covering the North and South Carolina territory.
Mr. Lawing was a member of Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church and former member, deacon and Sunday school teacher for 25 years at Whiting Avenue Baptist Church.
Additionally, he served as master Mason for Pikeville Lodge 715, was a member of the Scottish Rites and was a watchmaker holding membership in National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors.
An accomplished woodworker, he handcrafted his own casket from golden oak.
Preceding him in death was his first wife, Priscilla Ferguson Lawing, with whom he fathered two children, Cathy Henderson and her husband, Bill, of Iron Station, N.C., and Thomas Calvin Lawing and his wife, Jackie, of Matthews, N.C.
He later married his surviving wife, Nell Simpson Lawing, and fathered another son, Robert Christopher Lawing.
Other survivors include five grandchildren, Aubrey Kennedy and her husband, Walt, Laura Seagle and her husband, Jake, Katie Henderson, Jason Lawing and his wife, Ashley, and Kelly Gallo and her husband, Troy; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Louise Porter of Mint Hill, N.C., and a loving niece and nephew, Lauren and Jarman, who referred to him as "granddaddy."
In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by five siblings.
Services are planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2104, at Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church, 1600 Mallard Creek Church Road, with the Rev. Sean Barkley officiating.
Friends may visit one hour prior to the services at the church.
Burial will follow in Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery, where a Masonic service will take place.
McEwen Funeral Service-Derita Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
