MAE BELL MOTEN EXUM

Mother Mae Belle Moten Exum, 85, lovingly known by her family and friends as "Granny," 716 W. Chestnut St., Goldsboro, N.C., departed her earthly life Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at Kitty Akins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, N.C.
Mae Belle was born in Edgecombe County, N.C., Sept. 16, 1928. She was born to the late Mrs. Gladys Moten Dickens and Mr. Elijah Dickens.
She received her education in the public school system of Edgecombe County.
Mother Mae Belle was a faithful member at Christ Memorial Church, Goldsboro, N.C., where she served as the first mother on the church mothers' board.
Mrs. Exum was employed and retired with more 40 years of service from O'Berry Center in Goldsboro, N.C.
Mother Exum was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Savalius A. Exum Jr.; her daughter, Mary M. Exum; her son, Savalius V. Exum III; and her daughter-in-law, Bertha Swain-Exum.
Funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Saint James AME Zion Church, 206 S. George St., Goldsboro, N.C. Pastor Thelma Davis will officiate.
Burial will be held in Elmwood Cemetery, 306 Dr. Martin Luther King Blvd., Goldsboro, N.C., 27530.
A public viewing will be held Monday, May 12, 2014, in Apostle D. L. McIntyre Memorial Chapel, 900 S. George St., Goldsboro, N.C., from 2 to 6 p.m.
Mother Exum leaves to cherish her loving and precious memories to her son, Herbert Exum (Obelia); eight grandchildren, including Shantece Swain, Devon Swain and Savalius Swain, whom she raised, Revonda Exum, Kamilah Exum, Bakari Exum, Shatik Swain and Ahmed Exum; three great-grandchildren, Laniyah Swain, Aamiyah Swain and Yafeu Exum; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, friends and church family members.
At other times, the family will receive friends and other family members at the residence of Ms. Shantece Swain, 403 E. Spruce St., Goldsboro, N.C.
Tuesday, May 13, 2014, the family and friends will assemble at the residence of Ms. Shantece Swain, 403 E. Spruce St., Goldsboro, N.C., at 9:50 a.m. in preparation for the funeral procession.
Flowers may be sent to McIntyre Funeral Home, 900 S. George St., Goldsboro, N.C., beginning Monday, May 12, 2014, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
