We are saddened to announce that Audrey Johnson passed away peacefully in her sleep in the morning of Thursday, April 17, 2014.
Audrey was born in Charlotte, and raised in Southern Pines. As an adult, she moved to Burlington, N.C., Goldsboro, N.C., and then to Raleigh, N.C.
Along the way, she married Harvey B. Johnson, and they were married for 53 years; together they raised three strong, independent and capable sons.
Audrey was a devoted wife and mother.
The weather is so beautiful and spring is in the air; it's hard to believe she's gone. She was an amazing, competitive and strong woman.
She went to Queens College in Charlotte and then on to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
She played tennis competitively when she was younger, winning state and southeast United States titles in singles and mixed doubles.
After her sons were grown, she returned to tennis, and played as a senior. Due to her lifetime achievements, she was honored with induction into the North Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame in 1995.
Audrey was preceded in death by her dear husband, Harvey B Johnson; her parents, Harry Lee Brown and Lucye McDaniel Brown; as well as her brother, Harry Lee Brown Jr.
She is survived by her sons, Wayne Johnson of Raleigh, Alan Johnson and his wife, Dr. Amy Johnson, of Pikeville, Ky., and Kimber Johnson of Greensboro, N.C.
Also, she is survived by her five amazing grandchildren, Matt, Angela, Sarah, Lindsey and Caroline.
The family had a private memorial service Friday, April 18, and Audrey was cremated Monday, April 21.
