Service is one of the most rewarding principles of life.
This was one of the guiding principles for Dorothy Barnes Worrell, who served well to do her part by helping others, and then left to be with Jesus Jan. 16, 2014, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, N.C.
Dorothy Barnes Worrell, daughter of Kirby Lewis (Grace) and the late Sarah Dorothy Barnes, was born Aug. 10, 1947, in Wayne County, N.C.
She graduated from Dillard High School with the class of 1965. She attended Wayne Community College, where she received her associate degree in nursing, and had a rewarding career with 19 years of service as a registered nurse in oncology at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Prior to her nursing career, she worked for Americal Corp. in Goldsboro, N.C., for 17 years.
Dorothy Barnes Worrell attended Emmanuel Apostolic Church, where she served as first lady and church secretary, faithfully supporting her husband, bishop Donnell Worrell Sr., until the Lord called her home. She believed in holiness because holiness is right.
Dorothy Barnes Worrell was united in holy matrimony to Donnell Worrell Sr. Feb. 5, 1968, and their love for one another carried them for 45 years.
Their union blessed them with six wonderful children, a son, Donnell Worrell Jr. of Goldsboro, and five daughters, Donna Lynn Womack (Dion) of Goldsboro, Tara Nicole Worrell of Greenville, N.C., Kimberly Dee Shaw (Alvis) of East Haven, Conn., Jennifer Yvette Hayes of Jonesboro, Ga., and Michele Denise Worrell of Goldsboro.
She is also survived by her father, Kirby Lewis (Grace) of Washington, D.C.; six brothers, Samuel White of Goldsboro, Clifton White of Goldsboro, Herman White (Jean) of Goldsboro, Johnny Lewis (Jackie) of Goldsboro and Jerry Lewis (Elizabeth) of Calypso; six sisters, Edna Hobbs (Calous) of Dudley, Easter Best (Malcolm) of Dudley, Georgia Atkinson of Goldsboro, Vanessa White of Goldsboro, Diane Daniels of Goldsboro and Teresa Langston (George) of Dudley; two uncles, J.D. Davis and Robert Davis Jr. of Trenton, N.J.; two aunts, Jane Baldwin of Trenton, N.J., and Lena Mae Davis of Kinston, N.C.; a godsister, Anita Seward; seven grandchildren, Dionna and Erica Womack of Goldsboro, C.J, Kelly and Kirby Hayes of Hampton, Ga., and Jeremiah and Amaris Shaw of East Haven, Conn.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
Homegoing services will be held Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at 1 p.m. at Bear Creek Missionary Baptist Association Headquarters. Burial will follow at Wayne Memorial Park.
A viewing will be held Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home and Crematory in Goldsboro, with the family present from 6 to 7 p.m.
The family is in the care of Howell Funeral Home and Crematory in Goldsboro.
In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions can be made to Emmanuel Apostolic Church, 1329 Arrington Bridge Road, Dudley, N.C., 28333. Proceeds will be donated in honor of my mother, Dorothy Worrell, who fought against leukemia and WON.
