NORTH WILKESBORO -- Mr. Tommy Lee Dowell, 78, North Wilkesboro, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, at his home.
Mr. Dowell was born Aug. 30, 1934, in Wilkes County to James Monroe and Nora Lee Hawkins Dowell.
He was a retired United States Air Force Veteran with 23 years of service, and a member of Chapel Hill AME Zion Church.
Mr. Dowell was preceded in death by his parents; spouse, Janice Burns Dowell; six brothers, Audrey Dowell, T.A. Dowell, Vernon Dowell, Paul Dowell, Samuel Dowell and Elmer Dowell; and a sister, Alma Dowell Turner.
Surviving are his children, Debbie Embden of Jamestown, N.C., Vicki Dowell Simmons and husband, Jarvis, of Goldsboro, N.C., Gregory Dowell and wife, Mary, of Lynchburg, Va., Eric Dowell and wife, Kim, of Suwanee, Ga., and Ricky Dowell of Atlanta, Ga.; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; aunt, Katherine Poole; girlfriend, Diane Walsh; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, at Oak Grove Baptist Church on Rock Quarry Road, with the Rev. Stephen Hart officiating and the Rev. Ralph Cousins giving remarks. Burial with full military honors followed in Chapel Hill AME Zion Church Cemetery.
The family received friends at Oak Grove Baptist Church from noon to 1 p.m. Monday prior to the service.
