ELIZA A. McCANN

Aug. 27, 1911 - March 6, 2012

Eliza Arlene M. McCann, 100, slipped away Tuesday at the Brian Center.

A wake will be held Tuesday at J.B. Rhodes Funeral Home and Cremations Inc., at 1701 Wayne Memorial Drive, from 4 until 7 p.m. and the family will be present from 6 until 7 p.m.

Eliza was born in Clark County, Miss., to the late Ora Graham Miller and Peter Miller.

She attended elementary schoo in Hattiesburg, Miss. She accepted Christ into her life at an early age.

She was united in holy matrimony to Mr. Clarence McCann on March 27, 1927.

Eliza's first priority was to rear and nurture the 10 living children of the 14 that were born. Those children lived to reach adulthood and became successful citizens. Eliza was a great homemaker.

Eliza didn't formally join the workforce until after Elder McCann passed. However, she worked briefly as a caregiver as a teenager when Ora became ill. She resumed her career until she retired.

Eliza gave her life to Christ at Mobile Street COGIC, Hattiesburg, Miss., where she was active until moving her membership to Gravel Line COGIC, also in Hattiesburg. She gave a supreme effort to whatever task she was asked to do, and on many occasions went well beyond the call of duty in completing it.

She served as district missionary for 22 and a half years. She gave her very best until her health failed, when she chose to move to North Carolina with her daughter in 2009 and placed her membership at Bible Way COGIC.

Cherished memories are with her daughter, Jacqueline M. McDowell (Dr. Augustus G.) of Goldsboro, sons, Samuel P. McCann (Detella), Elder James El McCannie (Tammie); 40 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, special friends, neighbors, church members and colleagues.
