SIDNEY RAY BARNES

Sidney Ray Barnes, 143 Short St., passed away Tuesday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.
A native of Wayne County, he was born Sept. 24, 1938, the son of the late Duncan H. and Mattie Margarite Langston Barnes.
After finishing school, Sidney joined the United States Air Force, and upon his return from serving his country, he worked at Cherry Hospital.
Later Sidney joined the Goldsboro Fire Department, rising to the rank of lieutenant with 30 years of service, and also worked for the city of Goldsboro in the water department.
Sidney was a fun-loving man, who lived life to the fullest. He had a passion for golf and he loved fishing. Sidney was a happy man and always tried to share that happiness with all who knew him.
He was a lifetime member of Spring Hill Free Will Baptist Church, and was also a member of Goldsboro Elks Lodge #139 B.P.O.E.
A service to celebrate the life of Sidney will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Seymour Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Lewis Forsyth officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service and other times at the residence. A private burial will be later.
Sidney is survived by his wife, Joyce Mills Barnes; daughters, Cindy Barnes Alphin and husband, Jimmy, of Seven Springs and Sharon Barnes Block and husband, Chris, of Goldsboro; two stepdaughters, Teresa Mills and Saharon Baddour and husband, Tony, of Wilmington; three stepsons, Ricky Mills and wife, Sara, Timmy Mills, and Bryan Mills and wife, Karen, all of Florida. Sidney is also survived by a brother, George D. Barnes of Aiken, S.C.; two grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; a very special aunt, Pauline Wiggins of Goldsboro; and his first wife, Rose Barnes Towbin and husband, Jeff, of Goldsboro.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Court, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.
