JOHNNIE G. HOWELL SR.

PIKEVILLE -- Johnnie Gray Howell Sr. went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday with his family at his side.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Smith and Dr. Burkette Raper officiating. Burial will follow in the Pike Cemetery.
Johnnie was born to James Edward Monroe Howell and Annie Edwards Howell on April 24, 1924.
A lifelong member of the Nahunta Community, Johnnie grew up working in the tobacco fields of Route 2, Pikeville. A veteran of World War II, he served in General Patton's army in Germany with the 69th Infantry Division. He was the founder of Pikeville Insurance Agency, and was a lifetime member of the Nahunta Grange, Pikeville Lions Club, and the Pikeville Men's Prayer Breakfast, as well as a charter member of Living Waters Free Will Baptist Church.
Johnnie was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Mary Alice Stevens Howell.
He is survived by his son, Jay Howell and wife, Debby, of Pikeville; his daughter, Treva Howell of Goldsboro; his granddaughters, Paige Howell and Trudi Howell Rast and husband, Matt, all of Pikeville; and his sisters, Margaret H. Horne of Garner and Joyce H. Aycock and husband, Jake, of Wallace. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Winnie H. Howell of Knightdale and Cherry L. Howell of Pfafftown.
In addition to his wife and parents, Johnnie was preceded in death by his sister, Maxine H. Mott, and his brothers, Rudolph Howell and Jimmy L. Howell.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at his residence, 274 Pikes Cemetery Road, Pikeville.
