FAYETTEVILLE -- Bishop Frank J. Matthews, 80, Smithfield, died Saturday at Cape Fear Hospital.
A memorial service will be held tonight from 6 to 8 at Peace Memorial Christian Church in Fayetteville. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Shiloh Christian Church in Smithfield with the Rev. J.B. Woodhouse and Judge Addie Rawls officiating. Interment will follow at Rest Haven Cemetery in Smithfield.
He was born Dec. 25, 1927, in Pitt County to the late Bertha and Frank D. Matthews.
Bishop Frank J. Matthews was founder and senior pastor of both Shiloh Christian Church of Smithfield and Peace Memorial Christian Church in Fayetteville. He was the former pastor of Greenleaf Church of Christ in Goldsboro.
He was the former director of Johnston-Lee Headstart of Smithfield and a veteran of the United States Army, receiving an honorable discharge. He was also a former Boy Scoutmaster.
His survivors include his wife of 60 years, Mary Cox Matthews of Fayetteville; three daughters, Gwen Williams of Raleigh, Cynthia Mebane of Fayetteville and Pamela Spates of Clinton; two sons, Edward Matthews of Smithfield and Kenneth Matthews of Princeton; one brother, George Whitaker of Four Oaks; 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made out to the Frank J. Matthews Scholarship Fund, care of Shiloh Christian Church, Smithfield.
Arrangements are being handled by Sanders Funeral Home of Smithfield.
