Donald Jackson Best, 74, passed away on Wednesday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
A service to celebrate Don's life will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke United Methodist Church with the Rev. Adam Seate officiating. A private interment will be held at St. Paul United Methodist Church.
Don was born in Wayne County on Jan. 2, 1934, to the late C.J. Best and Wilda Bartlett Best. He retired from the Division of Medical Assistance in Raleigh where he was head of the Third Party Recovery Section. Don was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. During his years with the State he was also very active in the Boy Scouts of America. He was presented with the Silver Beaver Award for outstanding service with the Boy Scouts of America.
After his retirement, he was involved with the Wayne County Red Cross. Don was the Blood Services Coordinator for five years and continued to be active as a volunteer. He was the recipient of the Mary C. Norwood award for 2005 to 2006. Don was a member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club in Goldsboro.
Don is survived by his wife of 53 years, Shirley Cook Best; his sons, Donald Linwood Best and wife, Angel of Greensboro and W. Kevin Best of Wilmington; his grandchildren, Cory Best and Aimee Best of Wilmington and Caitlyn Best and Ryenn Best of New Bern; his sister, Lou Ann Carpenter of Raleigh; and his brother, Dean Best of Raleigh.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Red Cross, 600 N. George St., Goldsboro, N.C., 27534 or to St. Luke United Methodist Church, 1608 E. Pine St., Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.
Members of the Golden K Kiwanis Club will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends Friday at St. Luke United Methodist Church following the service and other times at his home, 110 New Hope Village Drive, Goldsboro.
