DOROTHY L. "DOT" LOMAX
Died Sept. 11, 2008
GREENSBORO -- Dorothy L. "Dot" Lomax, of 5317 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro, died Sept. 11, 2008, at age 83.
A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church, 1000 W. Friendly Ave., at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, with graveside services to follow at New Garden Cemetery, 800 New Garden Road.
A native of Rockingham County, Dot was the daughter of the late Frank C. Lauten and Lucy P. Lauten. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred M. Lomax Jr.
She was a graduate of Madison High School and attended Elon College. She retired in 1987 from Burlington Industries, having been employed in the executive offices for 43 years.
Dot was a member of First Baptist Church for over 50 years, serving wherever called, and was current president of Hope Sunday School class. She was a long-time member and president of Gate City Service League, a member of BI Friends, and a gift shop volunteer for Women's Hospital Auxiliary.
A selfless mom, she married a man who had three small boys, loved them and raised them as her own, and then had the energy to raise three more children. Even during her illness she thought about everyone else. A champion of the underdog, Dot believed her children should find their passion and be the best at whatever they chose to pursue. She was very proud and protective of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dot had a quiet but powerful form of leadership and a gift for bringing people together and peacemaking.
Surviving are her daughter, Dr. Laura L. Lomax and husband, Phil Barbee; sons John L. Lomax, and Richard T. Lomax and wife, Stephanie, all of Greensboro; stepsons, Fred M. Lomax III and wife, Rosalyn, of Goldsboro, Dr. Charles Lomax and wife, Wendy, of Greensboro, and James Ray Lomax and wife, Diane, of Summerfield. Also surviving are grandchildren Lauten Crow, Emily Crow, Alex Lomax, Eric Lomax, Kelly Lomax, Carson Lomax, Matt Lomax, Fleming Lomax, Fred Lomax IV and wife, Amanda, Meg Lomax, Weston Lomax and wife, Aimee, Robert Lomax and wife, Stacy, Meredith Lomax, Andrew Lomax, and Justin Lomax, as well as eight great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one brother, Frank C. Lauten Jr., of Madison, and brother-in-law Jim Lomax and wife, Anita.
The family received visitors at Hanes-Lineberry, 515 N. Elm Chapel from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday.
