Aug. 29, 1935-Aug. 29, 2008

Kenneth Eugene Kennedy of 558 Farrior Road, Mount Olive, N.C. entered the Church Triumphant on Aug. 29, 2008 after a brief and courageous battle with cancer.

A service of worship and thanksgiving for his life will be held on Monday, Sept. 1, at 3 p.m. at Calypso Presbyterian Church with his pastor, the Rev. Chris Currie, officiating. Burial will follow in the Calypso Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday evening, Aug. 31, from 7 until 9 p.m., and other times at the home.

Kenneth was born on Aug. 29, 1935 to the late Jesse Eugene and Mildred Lewis Kennedy and lived all his life in the Calypso area of Duplin County. He graduated from Calypso High School in 1953, served in the N.C. National Guard, and engaged in dairy farming with his father for several years. He worked with Jefferson-Pilot Insurance Company (formerly Pilot Life Insurance) as staff manager of the Clinton office, retiring in 1997 after 25 years of service. He continued to operate his farm in retirement, and was an avid gardener, sharing the fruits of his labor with friends and family.

Kenneth was a long-time member and elder in the Calypso Presbyterian Church and a member of the Calypso Volunteer Fire Department. At the time of his death, he had served as treasurer of both organizations for over 20 years.

He enjoyed fishing and traveling with his beloved wife of 47 years, Rachel Anne McLeod Kennedy, formerly of Sanford, N.C.

Leaving to cherish his memory, besides his wife, are his children, Lou Anne and Russ Gaffney of Greensboro, Ken and Debbi Kennedy of Mount Olive, and Kevin and Ellen Kennedy of Cary; his grandchildren, Kathryn and Michael Gaffney, Kody, Kailey, Scott, and Jason Kennedy; his special friends, Roger and Martha Davis of Calypso; his sisters, Peggy Benson of Blythewood, S.C., and Mavis Turpin of Wilson; a brother, Harold Kennedy of Wilmington; and his faithful companion, "Bear."

Memorial gifts may be directed to Calypso Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 321, Calypso, N.C. 28325, or to Calypso Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 367, Calypso, N.C. 28325.
