MADELINE SMITH GURGANUS

Madeline Smith Gurganus, 86, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, March 29, 2008, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by her family.
Madeline was born in Wayne County on Nov. 11, 1921, to the late Mark J. Smith and Vicey Inez Smith. She was married to the late Frank Gurganus. Madeline had devoted her life to caring for her family and later had worked as a nurse's aid at Wayne Memorial Hospital. She had been a member of Woods Grove Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church for more than 70 years. Madeline organized and was the first president of the Ladies Auxiliary at Woods Grove Church and also served as a Sunday school teacher for more than 30 years. She was a member and former president of the Neuse River Pentecostal Ladies Auxiliary Association.
The funeral will be held Sunday at 5 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Mike Grady officiating. Interment will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park.
Madeline is survived by her son, Ricky Gurganus and wife, Linda, of Goldsboro; her daughter, Darlene Massey and husband, Anthony, of Broomfield, Colo.; her grandchildren, Angela Gerken and husband, John, of Goldsboro, Debra Rowe of Goldsboro, Erin and Elyse Massey of Broomfield, Colo.; her great-grandchildren, Keli, Kati and Kourtni Gerken and Tyler Rowe; her sisters, Jewel Jackson and Jean St. Clair and husband, Ralph, all of Goldsboro; two brothers, Shelton Smith and wife, Charlotte, and Billy Smith and wife, Bettie, all of Goldsboro; her sister-in-law, Blanche Gurganus of Goldsboro; and her brother-in-law, Tom Tomlinson of Goldsboro.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her stepmother, Pansy Smith; her brothers, Marcellus Smith and Milton "Buck" Smith; and her sister, Markie Tomlinson.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 4 to 5 p.m. and immediately following the service at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at the home of her son, Ricky Gurganus, 109 Downing Place, Goldsboro.
