Phyllis Aileen Griffin Grant, 82, formerly of the Mar-Mac community, died Friday night at Sutton's Retirement Center surrounded by her family. Phyllis was born in Mount Morris, N.Y., to the late William Hewitt Griffin and Clara Isabel Breen Griffin. She was married to the late Joseph Dawson Grant. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, she has been involved in the Women's Auxiliary, serving in Relief Society Presidency. She and her husband served as missionaries to the Washington Spokane Mission and the Washington, D.C. Temple.

As a professional dancer, she performed at camp shows for American soldiers during WWII until she met her husband. As a special education teacher for many years, she enjoyed working with special students who needed her patience, understanding and good sense of humor to achieve their full potential. Her work was recognized as Teacher of the Year at Greenwood Junior High School, as Outstanding Woman of the Year by the Goldsboro Jaycees and Jaycettes, and Personality In The News by the Goldsboro News-Argus.

A service to celebrate her life will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with Bishop Gary Corbett officiating. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.

She is survived by her daughters, Denise G. DuBois and husband, Mike, of Goldsboro, Teresa G. West and husband, Eddie, of Goldsboro; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy O'Bryan of Big Flats, N.Y. and her brother, William James Griffin and wife, Betty, of Horseheads, N.Y.; 12 nieces and nine nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son, William Hewitt Grant and her brother, Milton Thomas Griffin.

The family will receive friends Tuesday at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home following the committal service at Wayne Memorial Park and at other times will be at the home of Teresa and Eddie West, 208 Connies Circle, Goldsboro, N.C. 27530.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be directed to the Edgewood Community Developmental School, 1601 Peachtree St., Goldsboro, N.C. 27530.
