LT. COL. JOHN DOUGLAS KOCH

Died Feb. 3, 2008

Lt. Col. John Douglas "Doug" Koch, 62, of Quail Drive, died Sunday evening at Wayne Memorial Hospital. He is the son of the late Ruth B. and John C. Koch, and husband to B.J. Koch. Lt. Col. Koch was a 32-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Air Force Reserves and an air reserve technician with the civil service. He was a highly decorated pilot with over 10,000 hours flying time in KC-10, KC-135 and C-130 as well as many other types of aircraft. Lt. Col. Koch was a veteran of the Vietnam War, followed by service in Saudi Arabia during Desert Shield and Desert Storm, as well as other conflicts. He was the chief of flight standards, an instructor and an evaluator pilot.

He was the proud father of two daughters and sons-in-law, Shannon and Chris Wright of Charlotte, Heather and Tim Johnson of Raleigh; a brother, Richard Koch of Jenkintown, Pa.; and a grandson, Evan Johnson of Raleigh.

A sister, Marion Taber preceded him in death.

Mr. Koch was a member of the Elks Club, the Daedalions Club, Ducks Unlimited and Quail Unlimited. He also enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting and playing golf.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service.
