CHARLES W. CRONE

On Friday, Dec. 14, 2007 Charles William Crone of Mount Olive, N.C. succumbed after several years of declining health. He was born on Sept. 22, 1930 in Goldsboro, the son of James Clarence Crone and Bertha G. Crone and is survived by his wife, the former Mildred Anne Hancock of Mount Olive and three sons, C. William "Bill," Robert Peyton "Bob," and James Bradley "Brad" Crone, all of Raleigh, and five grandchildren of Raleigh. Also, he is survived by two brothers, James C. Crone, formerly of Goldsboro living in Chapel Hill at the present time, and Ernest G. "Buddy" Crone of Gainesville, Fla. Charlie was pre-deceased by a sister, Marie Crone Alley of South Bristol, Maine. Other survivors are several nieces and nephews.
A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was an active member of the Christian Youth Group, he played football for Carolina for two years, and was a member of the ROTC. Immediately following graduation, he served for seven years in the U.S. Air Force. He was a former Rotarian, Boy Scout Leader, School Board Chairperson, Library Board Chairperson, Chairperson of the Johnston County Morehead Selection Committee, active church member, teaching Sunday School and a choir member at Horne Memorial Methodist Church in Clayton. He received the "Man of the Year" award in Clayton in 1969. He was also an Administrative Board and Council of Ministries member at Horne and at First Methodist Church in Mount Olive and a member of the Mount Olive Airport Commission.
He was a member of the Advertising Club in Raleigh and several social clubs. During his professional years his agency was awarded several cleos for outstanding ads. He began his career at WVOT in radio in Wilson, continued at WNCT-TV in Greenville and retired from his own firm in Raleigh.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2007, at First United Methodist Church in Mount Olive at 2 p.m. A private interment will follow. His family welcomes friends at his home at 204 N. Breazeale Ave. in Mount Olive from 7-9 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2007, and at other times, also.
