GREENVILLE -- Nellie McCown Herring, a long-time resident of Kinston died on Friday, Nov. 16, 2007, at Cypress Glen Retirement Center of Greenville, N.C.

Memorial services will be held at her original home church, the Providence Methodist Church near Goldsboro, on Sunday, Dec. 2, at 2 p.m. following a private interment in the family plot in the church cemetery.

Miss Herring was born Oct. 1, 1913, to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Victor Gray Herring Sr. in Wayne County, N.C. She lived and worked in the Goldsboro, N.C., area until 1949 when she moved to Kinston to accept employment there. Miss Herring was one of the first Kinston locals to be hired by the DuPont Company in 1952 where she worked until her retirement in 1976.

She was a member of the Queen Street Methodist Church in Kinston. After retirement she continued to participate in church and civic endeavors. She lived at her little home in Kinston on Park Avenue until 1995 when she moved to the Cypress Glen Retirement Center.

Miss Herring was the sixth of eight children and is survived only by her brother, Donald Patrick Herring and wife, Doris, of Wayne County. She is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews and their families including Robert B. Herring, who is her power of attorney and executor.
