SEDALIA SMITH GREEN
FREMONT -- Sedalia Smith Green, 78, of Turner Swamp Road, passed away on Tuesday morning, Oct. 30, 2007, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2007, at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home in Fremont. Elders John Hess and D. B. Stokes will officiate at this service. Elder John Hess will conduct a graveside service Friday, Nov. 2, 2007, at 11 a.m. at the Elmwood Cemetery in Fremont.
Sedalia was born in Wayne County on April 5, 1929, and was the daughter of the late Eli T. and Retha Blow Smith. She was preceded in death by her brothers, William H. "Billy" Smith and Eli T. "Pete" Smith Jr.
Sedalia was a graduate of Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College). A niece exclaims "that as a child she always thought that Aunt Sedalia was the prettiest woman that she had ever seen." This was further corroborated when Sedalia was crowned May Queen during her senior year of college. After graduation from college, she had a 38-year career as a secondary teacher of English, French and drama. She taught at Pink Hill, Jamesville, Fremont and Charles B. Aycock. At each school, she took a group of students each year to New York City to see plays on Broadway. Her dedication was recently acknowledged when she was hosted for lunch by a group of former students from James-ville High School who were celebrating their fiftieth class reunion. She finished her career in education by implementing the DARE program into the Wayne County schools for alcohol and drug prevention.
She was the first woman to serve as a member of the Wayne County ABC Board where she also became the first woman chair of this board. She was the first woman board-member of the Heritage Bank in Fremont and also served as a member of the City Library Board in Fremont. In addition she was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma which is an honorary sorority for teachers. She also was a member of Aycock Primitive Baptist Church.
Sedalia was preceded in death by her devoted loving husband, David G. Green. She is survived by sister-in-laws, Jean S. Smith and Anne M. Smith; nieces, Brenda S. Baker, Billie Smith and Patricia S. Jackson; nephew, Linwood "Buddy" Smith; great-nieces, Jenny Jackson, Amy Gambill and Baylee Smith; great-nephews, Mat-thew Jackson and Daniel Smith; and an aunt, Margaret Coker.
The family will receive friends on Thursday following the funeral service at Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home, 102 N. Pine St., in Fremont.
