James Owen Carter of Goldsboro died peacefully at home Thursday after a battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Enoch Marvin and Lorena Dickens Carter of Aurelian Springs, and by his brother, Jacob Marvin Carter of Albemarle. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Rightmyer Carter of the home; his children, James Owen Carter Jr. of Raleigh, Sara Carter Wester and son-in-law, Millard Winston Wester III, of Henderson; three grandchildren, Tracy Elizabeth Wester of Durham, M.W. "Wes" Wester IV of Raleigh, Kristen Alise Carter of Raleigh; a brother, Richard Linwood Carter and wife, Edith, of Halifax County; a sister-in-law, Millie K. Carter of Albemarle; as well as numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews; and loving and caring friends.
J.O. grew up in Halifax County, where he graduated from Aurelian Springs High School in 1945. He served in the U.S. Army and afterwards he joined the state Highway Patrol, which brought him to Wayne County. He later owned and operated Goldpark Lake, City Service Station and Jefferson Park 66 from which he retired in 2002.
He was an avid golfer until his health declined, and an Elk life member. He had a special place in his heart for children and dogs, having received much comfort from his "grand dog" Charlie. Those who knew him always heard stories and saw pictures of his grandchildren, whom he loved.
Nephews will serve as active pall bearers.
Honorary pall bearers will be Cleophus Monk, J.C. Tart, John Harvey Kennemur and members of the Goldsboro Elks Lodge.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 24 at Seymour Funeral Home in Goldsboro and other times at the home. The funeral will be conducted at First Baptist Church in Goldsboro on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 11 a.m., after which the family will receive friends in the parlor. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. at Cedarwood Cemetery in Weldon.
