MARY G. GRIFFIN

LEWISTON WOODVILLE -- Mary Lee Gardner Griffin died peacefully at her home in Woodville on Wednesday, July 11, 2007. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 13, 2007, at Grace Episcopal Church, Woodville, and will be followed by a luncheon at her home, 508 S. Main St., Lewiston Woodville, N.C.
Mary Lee was born June 2, 1916, in Warrenton, N.C., and graduated from the women's college in Greensboro, N.C., in 1939. She taught school in Warren, Northampton and Bertie Counties, and in 1962, after completing her Masters of Guidance at East Carolina College, she became the first guidance counselor in Bertie County at Bertie High School. After her retirement in 1975 and the death of her husband, Burges Urquhart Griffin, in 1963, Mary Lee devoted her time to yard work, reading and crewel-work and especially enjoyed playing cards and working crossword puzzles. She served as a docent for Hope Plantation near Windsor and enjoyed giving tours of the historic house and grounds. She also spent lots of fun times with her grandchildren and was alert and sharp-minded almost to the end.
Mary Lee is survived by her daughter, Louise Griffin Kesler and her husband, William Thomas Kesler; her son, Burges Urquhart Griffin Jr. and his wife, Pamela Davenport Griffin; her grandsons, William Thomas Kesler Jr. and his wife, Chrystina Franklin Kesler, James Griffin Kesler and Colin McKenzie Clark Griffin; her great-grandsons, William Jackson Kesler and Richard Bennett Kesler; and her dear friend and devoted caregiver, Lisa Jean Peterson.
The family will receive visitors any time at 508 S. Main St., or at the home of B.B. Griffin, 602 S. Main St., in Lewiston Woodville. Flowers are welcome and memorial contributions may be made to Grace Episcopal Church Churchyard Fund, P.O. Box 715, Lewiston Woodville, N.C. 27849.
