Velma Bass Gurley, 77, died Saturday evening at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.

Mrs. Gurley was born in Wayne County to the late Edward Bass and Pearl Ferrell Bass. She was married to the late Joseph Edward Bass and Bobby Gurley. Mrs. Gurley was a retired seamstress and was a member of Fremont Free Will Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home. The Rev. Kelvin Gurley will officiate. Interment will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Elmwood Cemetery, Fremont.

Mrs. Gurley is survived by her daughters, Sandye Sparks and husband, Jim, of Pikeville and Annette Capps and husband, Bobby, of LaGrange; her sons, Ernest Bass and wife, Margaret, of Princeton, Dwight Bass and wife, Sylvia, of Goldsboro and Dale Bass and wife, Lynn, of Florida; 17 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Oddie Howell of Pikeville and her brother, Billy Bass of Goldsboro.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to the Kitty Askins Wish List, 2402 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, N.C. 27534.

The family will receive friends Monday following the funeral service at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Sandye and Jim Sparks, 102 Stewart Ave., Pikeville.
