DR. FRANK S. PARROTT
June 10, 1917-March 11, 2007
SALISBURY -- Dr. Frank Strong Parrott, 89, died peacefully at his home on Sunday, March 11, 2007, surrounded by his wife and two daughters. Born June 10, 1917 in Goldsboro, N.C., he was the son of the late Robert David Parrott and Blanche King Parrott.
Dr. Parrott spent his early years in Goldsboro, N.C., until the early death of his mother, when he left home to attend St. Leo's for Boys in Belmont, N.C. He later attended Christ School in Arden, N.C. and graduated from Goldsboro High School in 1935. He graduated from Wake Forest College in 1939 and Bowman School of Medicine in 1943, where among numerous offices and awards, he served as president of Theta Kappa Nu Fraternity and president of the Bowman School of Medicine Student Body and was listed in "Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities". During his internship at University Hospital, Baltimore, Md., he met and married Miriam Stultz on December 27, 1943. Following his internship, he served as a captain in the Army Medical Corps for two years. After military duty, he completed his surgical residency at Baltimore City Hospital and then entered private practice in Mount Airy, N,C. Approximately nine months later, the hospital burned, destroying it beyond repair, and Dr. Parrott moved to Statesville, N.C., serving as surgeon at Davis Hospital. Wanting to be in private practice, he moved to Salisbury in 1954, was certified as a diplomat of American Board of Surgery, and remained in practice until his retirement in 1985.
He was active in the community, being a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and enjoying more than 50 years as a member of the Salisbury Rotary Club. Both he and his wife were Paul Harris Fellows. After his retirement, he attended Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, completing courses in woodworking and developed the hobby of making furniture for family and friends. He was an active hunter and fisherman throughout his life and in later years spent several days a week at the Rowan County Wildlife and Gun Club, shooting skeet and trap.
In addition to his wife, Miriam, Dr. Parrott is survived by his two daughters, Elizabeth Parrott Hart of Columbia, S.C.,.and Martha Marie Parrott of Salisbury, N.C.; two granddaughters, Brantley Sheehan Horton of Greenville, S.C., and Rebecca Doughtery Law of Americus, Ga.; three great-grandchildren, Sam, Addison and Harrison Horton of Greenville, S.C.; and one brother, Albert DeKalb Parrott of Goldsboro, N.C.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 14 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Parrish House.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina, P.O. Box 127, Lake Waccamaw, N.C. 28450.
