JOSEPH D. MCLEAN

Joseph Davidson McLean, 80, died Friday at Wayne Memorial Hospital. He was the son of the late Dr. A.A. McLean and Hallie Hall McLean of Lenoir. He attended Lenoir Public Schools, and was a graduate of the Darlington School, Rome, Ga., and Davidson College.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was awarded a bronze star for meritorious service. Following his military service he graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in Journalism. He worked several weekly newspapers in North Carolina, served as a sports writer for the Fayetteville Observer, and then joined the staff of the News and Observer in Raleigh, where he worked in several departments. Mr. McLean was a member of the West Raleigh Presbyterian Church, where he served on the board of deacons and wrote for church publications.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the West Raleigh Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Joe Ward officiating. Interment will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in Lenoir at Bellview Cemetery with the Rev. Rob Hinman, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Lenoir officiating.

He is survived by two sisters, Dorothy M. McCormick of St. Pauls and Hallie M. Parker of Chapel Hill.

Arrangements are with Seymour Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Goldsboro.
