DAVID G. GREEN

FREMONT -- David G. Green, age 80, of Turner Swamp Road passed away on Thursday evening, January 25, 2007, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, January 28, 2007 at 7 p.m. at the chapel of Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home in Fremont. Elder John Hess, Elder D. B. Stokes and Dr. Don Sauls will officiate. A graveside service was held on Monday, January 29, 2007 at 11 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery in Fremont.
Mr. Green was born in Wilson County on March 5, 1926. David was one of two sons of the late William and Maggie Flowers Green. He was preceded in death by his brother, William L. Green.
David served in the United States Air Force during World War II with the 93rd Bombardment Squadron, 19th Bomb Group as a tail gunner on a B-29 Flight crew stationed on the island of Guam. He was always athletic and played as a member of the baseball team after the war ended. He received a football scholarship to Atlantic Christian College and graduated with a degree in U.S. History and Social Studies. He also earned a Master's Degree in Business Administration from East Carolina University, a Master of Science degree in Gardening from North Carolina State University and did post graduate work at Duke University. He dedicated most of his life to public education in Wayne County, Goldsboro City, Jamesville, Nahunta, and Martin County schools serving as a teacher, coach and administrator.
Near the end of his professional career, he became director of federal programs for Wayne County Schools. He returned to the classroom because he missed the students and in this capacity, developed a contemporary social problems course that dealt with social and career issues that was exceedingly popular and won national recognition. Mr. Green and his wife, the former Sedalia Smith lived most of their life together in the Eureka Community.
David retired in 1988, but continued to teach part-time in area colleges in Police Science. Working with law enforcement professionals was a highlight of his early retirement years. He retired again in 1994.
Mr. Green was a member of Aycock Primitive Baptist Church. He was a member and former president of both the Eureka Ruritan Club and the Downtown Goldsboro Lions Club. He served four terms as president of the North Carolina Association of Educators and as president of North Carolina Retired School Personnel for District 14.
In addition, Mr. Green was an avid horticulturist and his volunteer work with eastern bluebirds helped strengthen the bluebird population, which is now making a comeback.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sedalia S. Green; nephew, Bill Green of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida; niece, Virginia Green Joyner of Greenville; great nephews, Bill Green IV of Raleigh, Shawn Green of St. Augustine, Florida, Robert N. Joyner Jr. of Carrboro, North Carolina, Jonathan G. Joyner of Greenville and Paul W. Joyner of Mobile, Alabama.
The family received friends Sunday, January 28, 2007, immediately following the service at Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home, 102 North Pine Street in Fremont and other times at the residence.
